Medical Billing and Coding

Diploma Program
520 Clock Hours

Program Description
This program is designed to prepare the student with the necessary skills to be employed in an entry level position as a Medical Coder in a variety of health care settings; including hospitals, physician’s office or clinic, home health agencies, hospice, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation facilities, insurance companies, and pharmaceutical companies. This program will provide the graduate with the ability to interpret the medical records of patients in all types of health care facilities to obtain detailed information regarding their diseases, injuries, surgical operations and other procedures. Utilizing this information, the Medical Coder then assigns codes using ICD-9-CM International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modifications and Current Procedural Terminology for subsequent health insurance billing. In addition, students will learn how to handle all components of claims processing.

Career Opportunities
With the increased complexity of obtaining third party reimbursement for medical care, there is a steadily increasing demand for qualified Medical Coders. Employment opportunities exist in doctors’ offices, outpatient facilities, public and home health agencies, hospice organizations, nursing homes, hospitals and rehabilitation facilities. Many government agencies also require coding expertise. As the complexity of health care reimbursements continues to evolve, increased scrutiny is placed on the reimbursement process and accuracy of medical claims. The need for qualified medical coders has increased dramatically and will continue to increase both in Pennsylvania and throughout the nation.
